A Trip to the Library with Donna Holmes

Hello once again, hasn’t it been such a wonderful and amazing summer already?! Rainy and cold, followed by sunshine, humidity and heat!

It’s so typical of a British summer, isn’t it? We thought we would try and escape it and head to Austria to visit family, only to find they too have been having a time of it! They have had so much rain this summer, although luckily the week we were there, there was a break, and we had some glorious days with some hot temperatures and fantastic storms over the mountains. The nearby lake with mountain-fed water was equally warm and ice-cold as it washed over us.

This month we are discussing “Black and White”.That might seem like an easy topic - coal is black, snow is white – but metaphorically speaking, it’s much more complex. We see things in “black and white” or discuss facts in “black & white”. As an artist, I frequently convert my colour photographs to black and white to study value and balance in my images.

Seasons too can be interpreted in black and white - dark cold months versus bright warm ones. My artistic journey mirrors this dichotomy; some days are dark and hard to navigate, I feel lonely and dejected. Other days are bright with optimism and clarity of purpose.
