Editor’s Note

Unlike novels, magazine articles, or essays, a poem is arguably more akin to a painting or a song than a literary piece. This is because a poem is a complex, often rather brief, expression that creates an instantaneous image within the reader’s mind and a rhythmical sound when read aloud. Yet poetry seldom features within the media. For our smart phones, televisions, and magazines must be packed with non-stop imagery and punchy headlines to be enjoyed – right?

Well, yes but we also need to think about our mental health. Of course, vibrant photographs and videos are marvellous stimulants. Yet if we take the time to absorb, ponder and question the literary information in front of us, then our mind soon begins to create a variety of depictions. After all, the word ‘imagination’ comes from the fact that we visualise our thoughts and transform them into images. Indeed, when we take these factors into account, it is little coincidence that so many psychologists believe reading to have such a positive impact upon not only our intelligence but our mental wellbeing.

‘Life’s a Beach’, Dan Husband

Fiercely we must fight, against the wavering light. All our might may be to slight to hold back the deluge of the night. These wavering waifs waiving their right to survive. Battle lines are drawn in the sand, as the moon’s gradual ascension illuminates two lovers faces, masks of fear and apprehension.

The rattling sabres and lashing of tongues show that the true battle being fought has begun. A clashing of ideals. The ringing of tempered steel. They shift their weight, fingers creep across flesh in a weaponized state. Goose bump minefields arise at the faint feeling of a faint feeling where hands had been placed.

The melding of meat gave way to the moans, screams in shadow and shade as these two sexually charged armies fought on. Two tattoos drummed against ribcages as the bestial bombing ensued. Pulmonary artillery blew pieces of them off, lost into the blue. Sparks of electricity and Tesla coil weaponry arced along raised hairs as the companion’s conflict continues raging.

The glimmer of blades beneath amorous air raids. Bloodletting began when we both transgressed, now all that’s left is meaningless sex and moving missile texts. If life truly is a beach, then this is Dunkirk. We lied to each other as we went about our bloody work.
